An Island Sprouts in Brooklyn

Not sure how we missed this one, but…

It seems the Brooklyn Public Library has at last acknowledged its native son, George P. Aberle, better known to history as Eden Ahbez.

The article also shows a picture (above) of the Hebrew Orphan Asylum, where Ahbez and his twin sister Aditha were dropped off in 1917, before being sent to Kansas on the Orphan Trains, where they grew up under the foster care of W.M. and Sadie McGrew.

Oh, and while we’re at it, a website recently posted Ahbez’s birth certificate, replete with stamps from government officials certifying his name change from Aberle to Ahbez.
