I just discovered this website about the storied history of the old sign up on Mt. Lee:

There’s a lot to weed through here, as the site’s host, Hope Anderson, recently made a documentary about the HOLLYWOOD sign, and is obviously one of its great historians.
This particular link goes to an article that Anderson wrote about one Albert Kothe, the gentleman who may have lived in the little shack behind the vaunted sign. (Anderson says it wasn’t a shack at all, but a shed, replete with lightbulbs for changing out.)
According to old-time California nature boy Bob Wallace, Ahbez used to camp out next to a shack up there in his sleeping bag, where he’d also sit and hold his hand-carved bamboo flutes up to the wind to let nature play its own song!
The quest continues…
Anderson also posted a painting of the shack behind the Hollywood Sign here: https://underthehollywoodsign.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/kothe-cabin-2.jpg
